Deposits vs Interest
Recurring Deposit (RD) — Complete Guide
A Recurring Deposit (RD) is a savings scheme where you invest a fixed amount every month for a predetermined period. It helps build a savings habit while earning interest on your deposits.
RD Maturity Formula
M = R × [(1 + r/n)^(n×t) - 1] / [1 - (1 + r/n)^(-1/3)]
Where R = monthly deposit, r = annual rate, n = 4 (quarterly compounding), t = tenure in years
RD Interest Rates (2024-25)
- SBI RD: 6.50-6.80% | Senior Citizen: 7.00-7.30%
- HDFC Bank RD: 6.60-7.10% | Senior Citizen: 7.10-7.60%
- Post Office RD: 6.70% (5-year)
RD vs FD vs SIP — Comparison
- RD: Fixed monthly, guaranteed returns, low risk, bank deposit.
- FD: Lump sum deposit, slightly higher returns than RD, no monthly commitment.
- SIP: Monthly into mutual funds, market-linked returns, higher risk but potentially higher returns.
Tax on RD Interest
- RD interest is fully taxable — added to your income and taxed at your slab rate.
- TDS is deducted at 10% if interest exceeds ₹40,000/year (₹50,000 for senior citizens).
- RD does not qualify for Section 80C deduction (unlike 5-year Tax Saving FD).
